Chris Assaad is an incredible songwriter and musician. His music has this way of nourishing my soul. It’s deeply grounding, but also uplifting. I’ve been a BIG fan for years. His songs especially hit in the early mornings. They have a way of bringing me directly to my heart.
There’s something so soothing about his music.
Chris is also a dear friend.
For the past six years, we’ve been in a men’s group together. We’ve shared a lot of life, reflected deeply, and supported each other through it all.
So when Chris asked if I wanted to try something new by blending our art forms (his songwriting and my guided meditations), I felt a real excitement bubble up.
But I won’t lie… I was nervous too.
Chris has over 20 years of experience. He’s toured around the world, played with incredible musicians, and released so many beautiful albums. Meanwhile, I’m used to creating solo, in my own little bubble. I wasn’t sure if I could keep up or contribute anything meaningful to a collaboration like that.
Thankfully, we kept the pressure low.
We weren’t trying to make a “thing.” There was no outcome in mind. We just wanted to jam. To play. To see what might happen. And if nothing came of it, that would’ve been totally fine too.
So he came over to my place.
We went for a walk. Talked about life, love, and creativity. Then we came back to my loft, I set up the microphones, he set up his looper, and we sat down together.
Open. Curious. A little unsure of what was next.
We tried a few beats. Played around with some lyrics. Nothing really stuck.
And then these seven words dropped in, almost out of nowhere:
“Dear God, can you hold my hand?”
I spoke them into the mic.
And suddenly, everything shifted.
The energy in the room changed instantly. We both felt it.
Where did those words come from? —> No idea.
What exactly do they mean? —> Doesn’t really matter.
Shall we see what happens next? Absolutely, let's go!!!
Somehow, we caught that exact moment on video. (see below)
And now you can actually see the very beginning of this song coming to life.
Keep in mind, this video is super raw and unfiltered. The very first breath of the song.
Next week, I’ll share the final version of the song with you, but for now, I thought you might enjoy seeing how it all began.
It was honestly one of the most meaningful collaborative experiences of my life.
I told Chris afterward that it felt like a bucket list moment. Except I didn’t even know it was on my list until we did it. To sit in the studio with one of my favourite artists, watch him produce, hear his guidance, and witness him bring the song to life—it was surreal.
I’m so deeply grateful.
I can’t wait to share the final song with you all next week.
It’s something special.
Big love,
D
