Creativity is not your employee.
She’s not here to help you impress your boss or build your following. Although yes, she can help with both.
The truth is, with her support, literally anything is possible.
A lot of us have felt her brilliance in our lives. We have felt what it’s like when she blesses us with her radiance:
—> Words flow effortlessly.
—> We can hold the attention of an entire room with our ideas.
—> We are often showered with praise.
It’s an electric feeling to be in union with Creativity.
Until some of us take advantage—we see her impact on our bottom line and start to seek her out only when it’s connected to work and money.
She is not your freakin employee!
When we diminish Creativity’s role like this, we are not only disrespecting her, but we are also denying what could be the most important relationship in our lives. Because Creativity is our direct line to our hearts, our dreams and even to God.
I’ve had many conversations with people looking for help because they feel creatively stuck.
When I hear this, my first question to them is, “What is your current relationship with Creativity?” I want to know if they have any practices or spend any time with her just for fun, just for love, just for pleasure.
Usually they don’t. Usually it’s all business. And usually, the reason they want to get unstuck is so they can finally launch that business, build that brand or write that book.
Imagine for a moment trying to pull this off with your (human) romantic partner or even your best friend: every conversation is work-related; every activity, all the time you spend together, is about business…
You’d kill the love and intimacy in your relationship.
With no love or intimacy, you’re headed toward resentment and burnout.
I am not saying you can’t collaborate with Creativity to do some truly awesome work, but if it’s all work all the time, you’re being a selfish partner. Sounds harsh, but it’s true.
Creativity is not your employee. So be real with yourself for a minute…
—> When do you spend time with Creativity just for fun or pleasure?
—> Do you ever spend time with Creativity without your phone or any tech present?
—> Do you have any creative goals or projects that have nothing to do with work?
This Week’s Date Idea:
Here are a 3 date ideas for anyone interested in building a non-work pleasure practice with Creativity.
Morning Pages
Journaling in the morning with no agenda or real structure is like starting your day with a morning cuddle in bed. It’s a great way to connect with Creativity before your day gets busy. All you need is a journal and a pen and maybe some nice music to get your creative energy flowing.Solo walks without your phone
This is like holding Creativity’s hand. An intimate and sweet, yet powerful way to reconnect heart to heart.Dance
Any form of dance, where you are able to let go and find pleasure in your body. My favourites are Ecstatic Dance and Contact Improv Dance, but all dance forms work. Even dancing in your kitchen for a few moments counts.
This Week’s Journal Prompt:
Imagine meeting someone new at a party. Your task is to describe yourself to them with as much detail as possible without referencing your work or your job.
Recently, I feel creativity pull at me, like a lover begging me to come play in the wild. But I move from one task to another and, at the end of the day, regret not spending time with her... Again.
Thank you for helping me to recognize how important she is. I had forgotten. Today, Creativity and I have a date. ❤️❤️
